This South African endemic grows widespread from Worcester to Uitenhage. It occurs in exposed rocky areas mostly in mountainous habitat amongst fynbos but also on lower hills or stony flats e.g. near Worcester. Flowering occurs in late winter to spring.

The striking flowers are usually a translucent blue-mauve marked with dark purple and yellow lines. The lower three tepals have a transverse yellow band usually outlined in dark blue or purple. The more eastern forms are a dusky yellow colour.
