This is a robust and large growing medusa head. The plants are found from around the Malmesbury district northwards.
The size of specimens do vary from locality to locality. There is some resemblance to Euphorbia caput-medusae from the Cape Town area and the plants are probably closely related. Euphorbia tuberculata is however generally a more robust plant with thicker branches and more prominent tubercles.
Euphorbia tuberculata - Van Rhynsdorp district.
A plant originally from Van Rhynsdorp district growing in full sun.
A plant introduced from a shady to a sunny position. The sprawling branches are however not uncommon in this species.
The cyathia (flowers). The cyathia are bisexual containing both male and female parts. While the cyathia are often found right up to the tip of the branches of Euphorbia caput-medusae, this does not seem to be the case with Euphorbia tuberculata.
Some plants are available on Plant Auction from time to time.
