The species name 'candida' is applied to the neatly compact and white-haired Haworthia from the immediate vicinity of Ladismith in the Little Karoo. The plants are quite similar to Haworthia aranea and also share the neatly arranged leaves of the latter. Haworthia aranea seems more confined to shaded semi-fynbos/succulent vegetation, while Haworthia candida grows more in Karoo succulent vegetation. This is more a general impression and can probably be refuted. The images are pretty old and were taken with a low resolution Mavica camera. When found in the wild the plants often have a striking white appearance. |
