Gasteria carinata is found in coastal areas south of the Langeberg between Mossel Bay and Hermanus. The plants prefer to grow in the shade of bushes, but are also sometimes found growing in the open. The plants can become rosulate, spirally arranged or sometimes remaining distichous.



Three varieties are recognized: Gasteria carinata var. carinata, Gasteria carinata var. verrucosa, Gasteria carinata var. glabra,
