Ferraria variables has a wide distribution in arid areas from southern Namibia to the Little Karoo.

This bulbous plants usually thrive in sandy areas. The bulbs consist of flattened disks that are usually fairly shallow below the surface of the soil.

The flowers vary in colour from yellowish to almost brown. The plants are smaller than the dark flowering Ferraria crispa which has anthers parallel to each other while in Ferraria variables they are V-shaped.
