This beautiful large winter growing bulb occurs widespread from around Piketberg southwards to Swellendam and eastwards to Oudtshoorn in the Little Karoo. The bulbs seem to avoid very arid conditions and usually grow where the rainfall is slightly higher.

The flowers appear in autumn after the summer rest. The leaves look somewhat similar to those of Brunsvigia striata and the plants can be misidentified when not in flower.

The photographs are from Keurkloof Nature Reserve.
