Astroloba smutsiana superficially resembles Astroloba spiralis to some degree. It is a low growing branching succulent plant with spirally arranged yellowish leaves. It differs from Astroloba spiralis in that the leaves are streaked with red especially along the edges. Astroloba spiralis usually form larger clumbs then Astroloba smutsiana. The distribution of the species is in the Little Karoo from Montaqu eastwards towards Barrydale and northwards to south of Laingsburg.
